The Northern Netherlands: Transformation of a gas-producing region into a forerunner in the biobased circular transition

Image 6

The Northern Netherlands and North-West of Germany are both agricultural regions and aim to play a leading role in the biobased/circular transition. Within this workshop André Heeres (Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen) will present recent developments of the transformation of the chemical industry in the Dutch region. 3N Center of Experts will present contributions to circular economy.

The Interreg VIa projects Realise-Bio lead by Cluster industrial Biotechnology and EMPHATI will present open project approaches that provide input for circular economy.

The contribution will outline the ingredients necessary to achieve the above-described (green energy, renewable feedstocks, knowledge, and infrastructure) and how this could also be relevant for the neighboring German - Dutch region. Within this workshop will provide several examples of initiatives on-going and also include the chemistry involved.

Project Realise-Bio

Image 1
The most important instrument in Realise-Bio are the model projects that are awarded to German-Dutch cooperations. The aim of these model projects is to further develop technologies that can be used to recycle biogenic raw materials, which are produced in large quantities in the border region as residual and side streams. In addition to technology development, Realise-Bio offers the model project partners intensive coaching in the realisation of their ideas.

Project EMPHATI

Image 2
A total of 9 partners under the leadership of 3N Kompetenzzentrum e.V., Werlte, have joined forces to further develop environmentally friendly materials made from PHA / PHA blends for injection moulding processes in the EMPHATI project.

The aim of this cross-border project is therefore to develop new sustainable and environmentally friendly products based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) - a particularly exciting group of bacterially produced thermoplastic biopolymers - and PHA blends with natural fibres for selected applications in injection moulding and 3D printing in the participating manufacturing companies. An accompanying sustainability assessment (LCA) is to be carried out across the entire cycle, starting from PHA production to the end customer and end-use scenarios. The focus is on the expansion and further cooperation between Dutch and German companies and knowledge institutes.
